How can research participation create value that goes beyond a gift card?
The 3Rs Study—a first-of-its-kind effort in the Bay Area—is exploring that very question. Led by UCSF in partnership with East Bay Getting to Zero (EBGTZ), this study focuses on understanding how educational opportunities might serve as meaningful incentives for participating in research, either alongside or in place of traditional financial compensation .
Why the 3Rs Study Matters
Research studies often rely on small cash payments or gift cards to thank participants for their time. While helpful, these incentives don’t always reflect what participants value most or what supports long-term growth.
The 3Rs Study seeks to learn directly from community members about:
How people view research participation
Whether educational opportunities could be a valuable incentive
What barriers may exist to accepting non-monetary incentives
How research practices can be more community-centered and equitable
By centering lived experience, the study aims to help shape future research models that better serve individuals and communities.
Who Can Participate?
You may be eligible to participate if you:
Are 18 years or older, and
Within the past five years, have worked, volunteered, or received services through an organization located in Alameda or Contra Costa County .

Available in English and Spanish
Participants may enter a raffle to win one of twenty-four $25 gift cards
Optional Focus Group Discussion

Help Spread the Word
Community organizations, service providers, and advocates play a vital role in amplifying this opportunity. Sharing the survey with staff, clients, and community networks helps ensure that research reflects the voices and priorities of those most impacted.
By participating in the 3Rs Study, community members can help reimagine what ethical, meaningful, and empowering research participation looks like—now and in the future.
